travel Note - The Old Summer Palace: A Full Day is Possible Here with Kids2016-04-01 10:01:51Share:
I loved this park. The gardens, park and archaeological remains at Yuanmingyuan in northwest Beijing are a good choice if you are looking for a peaceful day in a lovely setting with flowers, lakes, willow and other trees, winding paths. There were far fewer tourists here than at the more popular spots like the Suimmer Palace or the Forbidden City. Yuanmingyuan is enormous and one can spend as long as one wants there. Boat rides are available. The archaeological site we saw was not all that impressive, but the major point of visiting here is to enjoy the quiet beauty in the midst of a vast and sometimes overwhelming city with masses and masses of people.
I actually prefer it to the new summer palace, but both are very nice, and you can do both in a day.
Bring good walking shoes, and a camera. The trees are beautiful, and the walkways are nice.
The bathrooms are clean, but bring your own toilet paper. China isn't big on keeping bathrooms stocked with toilet paper.
We spent the morning at yuanmingyuan (old summer place). At the park there are a number of activities to keep the family occupied. Boat rides, electric car ride( if you get tired walking), family bicycle(2 or 4 seat), ruins and of course the ruins, lot of gardens.
Walking the park with a 4 month old was easy. Stroller okay as it is rather flat and easy to navigate, but we had the baby backpack.
Our 5 and 8 year old had a blast running in the open spaces. The maze and ruins are a definite attraction for the kids.
We missed the primary blooming of the flowers but it was still a very good park. Very large- we could have spent the entire day in the park.
Food is available - typical snack and street food- pack a lunch if you want something decent. Food is about double street value.
Admission cost was very reasonable - 25 CNY for an adult - 10 CNY for kids above 1.2 M.
