The Wofo Temple of Beijing - A Tranquil Journey in Summer2016-06-27 15:56:00Share:
Every time I go to the Beijing Botanical Garden, the Wofo Temple (the Temple of Recumbent Buddha) is a must visit for me, which is at the end of the Cherry Valley.
Although the temple is not big, there are a lot of people coming and worshiping. I especially fancy the quiet and solemn atmosphere of the ancient temple, which is very close to the Fragrant Hills Park and the traffic is convenient.
Beijing Wofo temple, or Temple of Universal Spiritual Awakening, located in the east of Fragrant Hill and southern foothills of Shouniu Mountain, which is in the north of West Hill. It is 30 kilometers away from the downtown area.
Originally built in the Zhenguan years of Tang Dynasty, it is also called Shou’an Temple. In the following years, it has been destroyed and rebuilt for several times, and its name has also been changed.
On the way to the temple, there is a long sloped road. After entering the gate, you can see two natural ponds and in it there are a number of fishes and turtles. When I go there, the turtles are lying on the platform, which is in the middle of the pool, and basking in the sunshine. The fishes, with a booming, collectively rush to the people who feed them.
During this summer vacation, a lot of graduate students in Beijing come here for a wishing. As the name suggests, the Wofo Temple has a side lying Buddha. Because the pronunciation is similar with the English word “offer”, it attracts a lot of students coming here for a good luck in next year’s college entrance exam. If you are studying in Beijing, you can also come here for a visit!

The Cherry Valley
From the northwest of Wofo temple, walking about 500 meters, you can reach to the cherry valley. Wide outside while narrow inside, this is a quiet canyon, with precipitous mountains on both sides and a winding stream on the bottom. The water is extremely clear!
Then go west about 1 km, you can see crisis peaks confronted and very steep mountains. How a majestic scenery! This is the famous Station of Gold Pigeons.
During the rainy season, you can see the water run down from the cliff ledge and then forms a huge waterfall. In late autumn season, the red leaves here are very colorful in the mountain forest. Here, together with the fragrant hill are two top scenic spots to enjoy the red leaves.
