A Transition from Indignation to Admiration in the Old Summer Palace

Yuanmingyuan (The Old Summer Palace) embodies the essence of the ancient Chinese garden art, and it was the best of a large-scale garden at that time. Its reputation spreads to Europe, honored as the “garden of the gardens”. While in October 1860, it was barbaric looted and burned by the British and French troops. Every time when I think of this, I was full of indignation.

This time is no exception. With resentment in my heart at first, I visited the old summer palace with my friends today.

From the eastern gate, we entered the garden. Going west for about 5 minutes, we arrived at the ruins of Dashuifa. Though all we could see then are just broken walls and stones, it’s not difficult for us to imagine the ever astonishing beauty and extremely majesty of the garden. During that minute, I was full of pity in my heart. What a pity!

Going west for another 5 minutes, we saw a beautiful pavilion before which is a perplexing maze. Though it seems the pavilion is very near before your eyes, it takes you a long time to find the exact entrance to enter the pavilion. We are very curious about the labyrinth.

Then we get to the Panoramic Model Hall. Using 3D technology, the hall returns the ever extremely spectacular garden before us. Sitting in the rest room, we watched the video about the introduction of the ever “garden of gardens”, all left us is astonishing and proud. How wisdom our predecessor are! What a magnificent garden it has ever been!

I have ever seen a lot of lotus in Beijing, but I have never sat among them and watch them so closely. Inside Yuanmingyuan, there are water routes especially designed for viewing the lotus at the nearest distance. Sitting inside a boat, we go slowly along the river route, cool wind blowing to us and all the lotuses around us. It is a fantastic feeling which hard to describe! It seems we are in a beautiful color painting. The people, the lotus, the boat and the cool wind integrate to a beautiful and harmonious picture! We feel an unprecedented happiness!

Today is doomed to be a memorable day for us. Although we have just travelled a small part of the garden, we can pride to say that Yuanmingyuan deserves the honor of “garden of gardens”! It’s not only a marvelous physical journey for us, but also mentally-from indignation to admiration!
