The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Major Snow (Chinese: 大雪), the 21st solar term of the year, begins this year on Dec 7 and ends on Dec 22.
During Major Snow, the snow becomes heavy and begins to accumulate on the ground.The temperature drops significantly.
It is a period that most areas of China, except the southernmost China, have suffered from the cold winter weather, when the average temperature in the frontier areas in northern China has dropped below -10℃ and the average temperature in Yellow River Basin and other areas in northern China is at about the freezing point. In Major Snow, heavy snow hits most parts of northern China and even the Yellow River Basin areas see the fall of snowflakes. The areas of southern China, however, especially Guangdong, still enjoy a warm weather.
Healthy Living Tips
Many people living in north China catch cold during this period. A folk prescription is to drink “Major Snow Healthy Soup”, which help defense the cold. According to traditional formula, the soup should be eaten three days before, three days in the middle, and three days after the “Major Snow” date, at 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the time where human body advocates kidney. Ingredients include 3 grams of cordyceps sinensis, 3 grams of dog meat, 3 grams of cinnamon. Boil together with water. During “Major Snow”, eating medlar, agaric, wax gourd soup is also very good to one’s health.
